TCM Herbal medicine

In Chinese herbal medicine, different parts of a plant (bark, roots, seeds, fruit, etc.), animal parts, minerals, and special stones are used for the treatment of symptoms.

The qualities and characteristics of Chinese herbs include:

  • temperature differentiations (hot, warm, cold, cool)
  • taste differentiations (sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, salty)
  • the aspects of the body that are most affected by the particular substance

A medicinal herb prescription is called a TCM formula, which may be cooked in water and taken by the patient.
