To become a licensed acupuncture or herbal medicine doctor in mainland China, Chinese students have to go through at least 6 years of studying Traditional Chinese Medicine at a Chinese medical university to receive their medical licence. In 2012 I took part in that National Medical License Test in China and was tested together with 900 Chinese students on different topics on Chinese and western medicine. For foreigners it’s not an easy way to get here, because all test preparations have to been done in Chinese language. In total it took me more than 1,5 years to fully prepare the medical license test which was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. It gave me fascinating insights into an ancient treating method which is still used nowadays, in the hospitals of Hangzhou. According to the regulations of Chinese medicine in China, foreigners have a lot go through a lot of difficulties to become licensed, one reason, nowadays there are still not many foreigners active practicing Chinese medicine in a medical clinic or hospital in China.
